Upland is a small, rural community in Kern County, California. It is located on the eastern edge of Kern County, about 8 miles east of Bakersfield and 20 miles north of Stockton. The population was 1,847 at the 2010 census. Upland is part of the Bakersfield-Hanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Upland was first settled in 1868 by Chinese workers who had come to work on the new Central Valley Railroad. The name Upland comes from Rancho Uplander, a grant given to them by President Abraham Lincoln in 1865. Uplander Peak (1,948 ft), located near town and within easy driving distance of most people, became an important landmark for early residents because it offered views across central Kern County and into Stanislaus County to the south. The post office was established at Upland in 1892; it served until it was discontinued in 1951. In 1916–17 a school operated here; it closed when the townQnhanlagee amalgamated with Bakersfield to form Hanford City. In 1984–85 a water treatment plant operated here; it closed when that plant was replaced by one nearer Hanford City. In 2000, two development projects were announced: one would create 572 housing units on 6 acres east of town center; another would create 2 million cubic feet per second (100 m3/s) of natural gas storage capacity along Interstate 5 near present-day Montebello as part of a project led by Southern California Gas Company subsidiary Pacific Gas & Electric Co.; both projects are still under development but may soon be completed UPLAND COMMUNITY COUNCIL has been formed to manage these two projects together

Upland is a small city in San Bernardino County, California. Upland has a population of about 30,000 people and is the county seat for San Bernardino County. The city was founded in 1887 by John H. Sears and his brother-in-law George Cogswell. It lies on the border of both Kern and Riverside Counties. Upland is located at . It shares itsName with two adjacent communities located in neighboring counties: Upland Park (Kern County) to the east and Westchester (Riverside County) to the west. These two communities were consolidated into one town when they were annexed into Upland in 1931 The first settler in what would become Upland was John H. Sears, who filed an application for land grant on February 5, 1887 (). He named his new community "Searsville", after himself and his brother-in-law Gouverneur Cogswell (). The name change came about because of disputes over ownership of lands between the different families involved – John H. Sears wanted to call it "Upland" while Gouverneur wanted it to be called "Westchester". In addition to their own village, George Cogswell and his son Clifford moved from their home just east of Pasadena () to establish what became known as "Cogswell Ranch" (), which stretched across much of today's City Of Los Angeles southward from Lankershim Boulevard through Lankershim Avenue eastward to Garfield Heights Boulevard just north of Lankershim Road (). This ranch provided grazing land for hundreds of cattle that grazed along what are now popular tourist routes such as MulhollAND Ketchum Streets (); today's University Boulevard (); Aliso Canyon Parkway (); Menlo Park Road ()); these streets were then connected together by a short stretch of road called Lankershim Boulevard before terminating at Sepulveda Boulevard near Lakewood Cemetery (). Today some remnants remain from this time period including part of Lankershim Blvd., Sepulveda Blvd., Menlo Park Rd., University Blvd.,Aliso Canyon Parkway(), Ketchum StREETs(), & Highland Ave.. At this time there was only one store, built by Gouverneur Cogswell on Main Street (), which served residents and visitors alike; no school or hospital existed yet! In 1888 there were 4 men working for Mr. Sears; carpenters David Griggs (1889-) & Willis Weems (1890-) ; mason James Baughman (1891-) ; plumber Amedee Perry (1892-) Despite all these efforts however, By 1890 only 10%of the total population had arrived - primarily prospectors seeking gold along sections of LA Rte 101 that ran through Kern and Riverside Counties

The first permanent residents of what would become Upland were Native Americans who lived near the present-day town site for centuries before European explorers and settlers arrived in the early 1800s. One group of pioneers, the Masons, built a cabin on the bank of Sacramento River in 1847. They named their new community after an upland valley they had seen while exploring nearby Mono County in 1848. In 1861, writer and humorist Will Rogers moved to Upland from Paterson, New Jersey with his family; he later remarked that "Upland's claim to fame as an American pioneer city goes back to its earliest days." In 1865, cattleman George Aiken settled in Upland and began raising horses and hogs there; henamed his ranch "Aiken's Valley" after himself and his late wife's ancestral home in Virginia). By 1880, most of what would become Upland had been developed as a agricultural center due to irrigation techniques pioneered by General James Hahnelbeck during California’s Gold Rush era. As part of its rapid growth during World War II (1942-1945), Upland employed over 100% women workers – more than any other municipality in Kern County! After World War II ended, many farmers abandoned agriculture for new careers such as manufacturing or professional services; however, many local businesses continue to operate today including several banks and several churches. In 1960, General Electric founded its largest plant outside Washington D.C., which occupied much of Poston Road across from now-defunct Sears Roebuck & Co.; this led to increased demand for housing throughout the townscape which has resulted in some surface land usage changes over time such as reclamation of former golf courses/parks intoresidential areas etcetera but overall these have not significantly affected architectural styles associated with particular areas within town limits
