After years of hard work growing food for their own families and trading goods with other farmers around them, they decided that it would make more sense to build themselves something permanent instead of constantly operating on a shoestring budget like many others at that time: “We determined never again to be contented living among men who could not provide us with anything but bread and water; we desired rather than live among any other class of people enjoying privileges which we could not enjoy without also laboring strenuously for them” It wasn't until World War II that Upham's dream came true when he helped found Palomar College which still operates today as one of Southern California's most prestigious universities (). Palomar made him famous throughout his lifetime because he singlehandedly developed jet aircraft technology during World War II using his woodchipping skills (). His wealth also allowed him to support community projects such as building a new hospital south of town (), which continues today as Medical Center Partners () . Today there are over 180 businesses clustered around Main Street making up what used to be 100 acres only 3 decades ago! One example is Main Street USA where you can find almost everything from hardware stores all the way down to clothing stores! There are even 4 drive-through restaurants inside Main Street USA! How did this small town get so diverse? It all began with agriculture – mostly farming fruits and vegetables but also raising livestock like pigs, calves, chickens etc., which gave rise to local manufacturing processes such as seed production (which still takes place today), construction materials (like homebuilding lumber), canned goods (like chili or cheese puffs) etc., which then turned into local marketing products such as T-shirts (), hats (), jars (), jugs () etc., finally becoming grocery items like eggs(), milk (), flour (), laundry detergent () etc.–all brought together under one roof! And just think how different things would have been if it weren’t for those pesky little pests that always seem to spoil everything!:)
