It is located on the east side of the San Joaquin Valley and on the edge of the Kern Mountains. The town was founded by Spaniards in 1853 as Rancho San José de Upland and changed its name to Upland in 1868 when it became part of newly created Kern County. The community has a fulltime school, two churches (one Baptist, one Catholic), a post office (since 1907), two businesses (a grocery store and a bakery), three homes (two cottage-style dwellings and one single-family home), and an outdoor amphitheater that hosts local music events throughout the year.

Upland is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 21,715 at the 2010 Census. It is part of the Fresno–Madera, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first person to settle in what is now Upland was José Maria Aguilar in 1827. In 1858, Augustus Earle bought land east of present-day Upland and laid out a township called Earle's Valley which would later become Upland. The town began to grow rapidly due to the railroad coming through and people being drawn to its fertile soils and natural resources such as water rights for irrigation on the surrounding hillsides. In 1892, an act was passed by Congress creating Kern County; within it were parts of Tulare and Madera Counties including much of the future city of Upland including most of the land east of Highway 395 between Earle's Valley and Tulare Lake. In 1905, when there were only 20 people living in Upland, incorporation became official with a meeting held on April 14th at First Presbyterian Church with Mayor John Leland presiding. On May 10th 1906 voters approved annexation by Fresno into Kern County from Tulare County making Upland one of two cities (the other being Fresno) within that new county. On December 15th 1907 residents voted 35-2 in favor of annexing Villa Rica into the city Limits thereby giving rise to what is now known as Villa Rica Boulevard running through downtown Upland just south of where I-5 meets Interstate 5 near Redemption Rd./Valley Blvd.). In 1916 when after many yearsconsolidation attempts by both cities they merged forming one giant city with a population over 100 000 for the first time ever! That same year they also raised their flagpole from ground level supporters had erected it previous year atop an old post office building until finally placement could be made during services on November 12th 1917 when dedicated at a cost $6000! This beautiful pole can still be found today located on Main Street SW corner Third Avenue/Sierra Vista Ave., across from City Hall
Upland, California was founded in 1850 by David H. Butte and his wife, Eliza C. Butte. In 1853, butte erected the first post office in the area. The town of Upland was named for Butte and it became an hourglass-shaped settlement with a population of around 25 residents in 1854. By 1860, the population had grown to over 100 people and Upland was incorporated as a city on November 3, 1865. The city quickly grew due to its natural resources such as oil wells and timberlands. In 1928, Upland changed its name to Modesto after Mayor Edward J. "Ed" Modesto who championed growth in the area during his term as mayor from 1926-1928
