Upland, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. The population was 2,395 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno metropolitan area. The name Upland comes from two sources: a Rancho San José grant in 1848 to Antonia Maria de Anza and her husband Vicente Gonzalez, and an adage “upward” being one mile (1.6 km) from the center of any village or town because it was thought that people would move up if they could find a good place to live. The first Europeans to visit what is now Upland were Spanish traders in 1769-1770 who named it Villa Rica del Oro because they found lead ore there. The citizens of this small rancho voted on January 15, 1847 to change their name to Upland after Surveyor General George Armstrong Cottrell surveyed the area for the United States government and named many places after American heroes such as General James K. Polk, Commodore John D. Sloat, Admiral David Dixon Porter and Major General Zachary Taylor. In 1860s local farmers began growing cotton and other crops; by 1870 most of Upland had been settled with 1,500 residents and three churches (St Bartholomew's Episcopal Church built in 1865), schools (Union School built in 1872), stores (Fresno store opened in 1886), post office (opened December 8th 1880) and water tower (built 1895). In 1915 when most of central valley was destroyed by fire, much of rural California did too including Upland which lost its identity as a tiny hamlet until World War II when there grew heavy industry here including aircraft manufacturing plants Lockheed Martin Aircraft Co., Honda Motor Co., IBM PC plant etc.; during this time about 60% of all jobs were located within five miles (.8 km) of downtown Fresno although some jobs moved out into surrounding counties such as Kern County which added 5%, but overall employment within five miles (.8 km) increased from 50% during World War II to 75% today although some jobs have moved outside this region into neighboring counties such as Kern County

Upland, California was first settled by the Chumash people in the late 18th century. The area now known as Upland was part of Rancho Santa Fe, a Spanish land grant given to Manuel Nieto in 1795. In 1848, American troops burned down the original rancho and established a post on the present-day site of Upland. The town of Upland was founded in 1861 by veterans of the Mexican-American War who had taken up arms against Mexico. By 1865, there were over 100 residents in Upland and it became an incorporated town in 1872. The town prospered until World War II when it lost its status as a local center due to military activity and suburban growth. After the war, Upland declined again and has only since regained some level of prosperity through diversified businesses and arts programming.
Upland is a census-designated place (CDP) in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 2,876 at the 2010 census. Upland is located on the northern edge of the San Joaquin Valley and bordered by Bakersfield to the west, Lancaster to the east and Kern to the north.
