Upland is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 5,752 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of San Joaquin Valley and south of Fresno. The first Europeans to visit what is now Upland were members of the Spanish missions in 1819-20. After Mexican independence from Spain in 1821, Rancho Tujunga was granted to Francisco Palou and his brother-in-law Manuel Miranda. In 1852, part of Rancho Gabilan was given to James Sweeny who named it after himself (Gabbyalan). In 1865, John Coyle sold land east of town for $5 per acre to Edwin Hite who started a sawmill and store there. A post office called Gabilan was established in 1870; it closed due to mail shortages in 1874. In 1904 Upland incorporated as a village with a population of 100 people under the leadership of Mayor Wm Burchardt and Postmaster J.C. Marchione Jr.. On October 20, 1907 an earthquake struck Kern County which destroyed many homes and businesses; however no injuries or fatalities occurred as a result of the quake according to reports at the time. In 1916 Upland had 1 fire department with 6 firefighters; by 1938 there were 10 departments with 30 firefighters each! In 1935 newspaper publisher Wm Burchardt donated 2 acres (0 hectares) west of town for use as a new high school campus which would serve grades 9 through 12 until United States High School opened nearby in 1959 when Upland became an unincorporated community once again! By 1940 there were 50 homes in town and over 150 businesses! In 1957 Upland became an unincorporated community once again when its last post office closed; however by 1960 it had re-opened as one small bedroom community with 1 racial minoritymajority householder (African American) while all other households were White! Residents continue to live here today although their number has decreased slightly since then due largely to high housing prices within minutes' walking distance from most businesses including supermarkets, restaurants and nightlife options that have arisen since then such as bars/clubs/entertainment venues etc., despite some efforts by local officials intended primarily for increased Diversity & Multi-cultural Stability through initiatives like voluntary Diversity Surveys conducted every few years or so instead?

Upland, California is located in southern California and it is the most northerly of Los Angeles' five counties. The name "Upland" comes from the Spanish word for "uprising", because these are high hills that rise out of the valley floor. The first Europeans to visit this area were Father Junípero Serra and his Franciscan Friars in 1821, who named the area San Diego de Alcalá after Saint Diego, Patron saint of Spain. The region was first populated by Native American people who lived in caves and tunnels near what is now downtown L.A. They hunted game, gathered plants and fruits, made baskets and arrows from local figs, and traded with other tribes east of the mountains. In 1795 a group of Spaniards under Governor Manuel Micheltorena discovered gold at Sespe Creek in present-day Upland; they named the creek Santa Clara after General Santiago Nieto, commander of Mexican forces at Sespe Creek during Mexico's war for independence from Spain. In 1821 Californios (Californians) claimed ownership of much of what is now Southern California when they seceded from Mexico as part of its struggle for independence; they called their new territory San Diego de Alcalá. The United States acquired portions of Alcalá in 1848 when California became a state; Upland was included within that addition. In 1850 Upland had a populationof just over 100 people (); by 1860 it had increased to more than 3,000 (). During its early years Ucland was mostly rural with few businesses or residents outside the small town where farmers raised cattle and did some logging. However, as railroads came through central California such as Los Angeles County, industry grew rapidly around Leland Stanford Jr.'s Palo Alto Company's sawmill on Menlo Park Road (later renamed Alma Road). By 1890 there were more than 1,000 businesses in downtown Leland Stanford Jr.'S Palo Alto company town alone! At this time many people also began moving into downtown Leland Stanford Jr.'S Palo Alto company town to take advantage of all that new industrial growth: women started working at local mills as housewives but soon transitioned into management roles; African Americans worked at various factory jobs until progress toward integration finally halted during World War II; while Latinos increasingly entered business through family businesses or starting their own companies throughout Southern CaliforniaUPLAND slowly transitioned into an overwhelmingly white Anglo-Saxon community characterized by wide availability of services (mainly post office), large suburban homes between arterial streetsJROTC academies were established here too which prepared LAUSD students for college
Upland, California was first settled in 1849. The town of Upland was founded on the east side of the San Joaquin River by John H. Slaughter and his wife Anna. The town was named for Anna's family farm that once stood in the area. In 1851, the United States government surveyed a townsite on the west bank of the river and renamed it Upland after Anna Slaughter's home state of New York. The town built its first schools in 1852 and platted its land with a block square plan. In 1860, Upland had 9 residents and 2 businesses. On July 14, 1861, during American Civil War (1861-1865), Upland supported Confederate forces while other parts of southern California sided with Union forces. In 1865, following the end of the war, Upland became part of newly formed Kern County as one of its initial rural counties. In 1902, Kern County erected a county courthouse located in downtown Upland which still stands today. From 1912 to 1916, local entrepreneur Harry Fenton organized what is known as "the Golden Age" of Kern County agriculture with his two main crops being grapes and citrus fruit production; this period is also recognized as when Kern County acquired its nickname "The Fruit Belt". By 1938 there were over 100 families living in downtown Upland including 50 farmers who grew produce from 2 million acres (810 km²)of farmland
