Union City, California is a small city in San Joaquin County, California. The population was 26,845 at the 2010 census. Union City is located on the Sacramento River and is adjacent to Stockton and Modesto. Union City was founded by Mormons who were fleeing polygamy in Southern Utah. It became an agricultural center due to its location on the then new Rancho Seco Irrigated Farmland near the Sacramento River. After World War II, many American GI's returned home and their children brought over their interest in hunting and fishing to town. In 1956, Union City's first high school opened when it merged with nearby Belmont High School. In 1978, Union City voters passed a $10 million bond issue for arts and culture projects that has funded such endeavors as the purchase of the old downtown movie theater which now houses the Union City Museum of Art; renovation of several churches; addition of a public library; new parks including Six Flags Park (now called Kings Park), Dundee Recreation Center, and more recently additions like Jack London Square (now called Embarcadero Square) and Valleyfair Mall. The current mayor of Union City is Vincent Gray (D). The current president of SDSU-UC Berkeley is Ricardo Bachelet (D).

It is the county seat of San Bernardino County and home to the University of Southern California. The first Europeans to visit what is now Union City were members of José Altamira's group who explored this region in 1820. The area became part of Mexican territory after the Mexican-American War and was initially named Ciudad Juárez because it was within Juárez Province. In 1851, the United States built Fort Chapman on an bluff overlooking downtown for protection against Anglo squatters who had taken up land around town during the Gold Rush era. This fort served as a military checkpoint until 1865 when it was abandoned and replaced by Mission Santa Fe which still stands today as a landmark. In 1876, William McKinley issued an executive order ordering all American citizens to leave southern Mexico if they could not find work there under certain conditions; those being forced out formed armed groups known as "the Klansmen". A large influx of European immigrants followed in response to McKinley's orders and by 1880 Union City had become one of largest cities in America with over 10,000 residents. However, due to prohibition laws at the time, many alcoholics and criminals were able to flee into America while others were deported back across the Rio Grande River which caused social unrest among immigrant communities already struggling financially under such difficult circumstances. In 1899 Union City became part of newly organized Los Angeles County when that area was divided between two counties: Orange County (to the north) and San Bernardino County (to the south). Prior to incorporation into Los Angeles County, Union City functioned as its own municipality with its own councilmember system until 1905 when it merged with neighboring Eastwood into one municipality with a single councilmember system - becoming Union City proper from then on. On July 15th 1905, voters passed Proposition 8 which repealed local self-government within Los Angeles County while leaving union city

The first Europeans to visit Union City were Spanish traders in 1769. In 1847, General Mariano Vallejo and his Army of the West reached Union City from Stockton after defeating an American force at what is now known as battle of Newhall Pass. At that time, it was one of the largest settlements west of the Mexican border and had a population of 1,200 people. In 1859, John Cranch discovered gold near present-day Union City while exploring for gold in northern California. He named his discovery Goldfield but it wasn't until 1862 when he developed a claim on some land east of town which became Union City proper. In 1863, Congress passed legislation creating American Samoa as part of the Overland Expedition against Mexico under President Abraham Lincoln to open up new territory for colonization by Americans. A group including local residents formed the American Samoa Colony Company with subscriptions from citizens throughout America to settle selected areas on Tutuila (the modern day island nation) without needing congressional approval or compensation for their land acquisitions. The company's first president was James Wickersham and its first treasurer Samuel Folsom*. On July 4th 1863*, during what is now known as "Drifting Day"** due to moisture deficits caused by strong offshore winds*, members arrived at their destination(* namesake day), plowed their furrowed fields and founded what would become Union City onshore from Tutuila Island (). The town of Union City was founded on November 1, 1847 by Capt. George C. Smith and his men from Concordia College as a tributary of the Central Valley River in what is now Fresno County. The first post office in Union City opened on December 1, 1848. On October 15, 1860, Union City became the county seat of San Joaquin County because of its location at the junction of Ulysses S. Grant Road and Doniphan Road (now Interstate 5) in central San Joaquin County. In 1873, two years after it became a county seat and due to growing needs for local government services such as water supplies and public hospital construction following gold discoveries in Nevada and California's central valley area, voters approved an $8 million bond issue to build regional courthouse buildings and other municipal services within Union City limits. These new facilities were completed starting in 1877-78 and are still used today as municipal buildings by Union City residents or by nearby agencies such as Alameda County Municipal District #2 and Kern County Sheriff's Department headquarters which are also located within Union City limits but outside the city proper boundaries
