Union City, California was founded in 1865 by James W. Hargrave and his wife, Mary. The town was named for the Union Pacific Railroad, which had a branch line running through it at the time. Early settlers were primarily farmers and their families, and there were no schools or businesses until after World War I when a school built of logs became the first public school in Union City. The post-World War II years saw rapid growth in Union City as its population increased from about 2,000 to over 20,000 within ten years. The construction of Interstate 5 in the early 1970s brought new jobs and investment to the town, which continued to grow during that period with annexations from other nearby towns. In recent decades, Union City has become one of Southern California's most vibrant communities with a rich history and cultural heritage.

The City of Union City was founded on November 11, 1852 by Captain James Hutton and his wife (Nancy) Hutton as a small community watch post between El Cajon and Pasadena. Today's downtown contains more than 30 buildings including four professional sports venues- Dick's Sporting Goods Park (formerly Home Depot Park), AT&T Park located adjacent to Downtown Plaza', Comcast SportsNet Arena which anchors Downtown Plaza' & 'Avenue Of The Stars'. On October 15th 1888, over 1 million people participated in what is now known as "the Great American BALL" in honor of America's bicentennial celebration - one of the largest ballivals ever staged in North America featuring teams from all 50 U.S states plus Canada & Mexico! In 1911 UC Berkeley moved from Berkeley Heights to east Los Angeles; UC Regent's Park became their new campus location on land donated by regent Hiram Sutter. In 1920 UIUC moved from Visalia to west Riverside; UC Riverside joined them there in 1924. The merger created one university with two campuses: UCLA and UC Irvine (the former Cahuenga Valley Campus). During World War II both universities functioned as research centers for munitions production and were among those hardest hit by the war effort; however they were able to remain open despite limited resources due largely to the hard work and dedication of their employees who themselves often went above and beyond for their loved ones back at home. After hostilities ended, post-war administrative duties continued at both campuses until they merged into a single institution known as USC/UCLA in 1949 – making USC/UCLA not only LA’s second largest university but also one which could boast an international profile within collegiate education circles! This move helped solidify UCLA’s role as an world-renowned center for higher learning while UCSB continued its strong legacy as a premier research institution well into the 21st century!
