Union City is a city in San Francisco County, California, United States. The population was 55,821 at the 2010 census. The city has a maritime history and its namesake, General John Fenton Sherman, fought in the Mexican-American War as an Army lieutenant colonel. Union City was founded by James Irvine on December 20th 1851 as part of a section of San Francisco called Rancho Rinconada. It became part of San Francisco on January 27th 1850. The first post office in Union City was established on March 4th 1850 by order of Governor Orson Welles. At the time it was known as Unionsville because there were only men living there. In 1853 the town site was platted and incorporated as Union City with James Irvine named mayor and Donald Cook Clerk of Selectboard. On July 8th 1860 voters approved annexation to San Francisco by vote of 3-2%. On February 17th 1861 Mayor Irvine resigned due to health problems after being appointed Acting Lieutenant Colonel for Ulysses S Grant during the American Civil War which he did not serve in. He died on October 11th 1861 from brain fever contracted while serving in Mexico City where he had been based since his return from war service two days earlier
