Union City grew rapidly during the Gold Rush, and by 1870 it had a population of over 100,000 people. The railroad arrived in 1876 and soon made Union City an important stop on the east coast Railroad network. In 1918, Union City became a city charter member and in 1958 it became one of California's 51st statehoods.

The first settlers to Union City were two brothers by the name of Fenton and their families from Kentucky who came overland from Kentucky during the Gold Rush in 1848. They built the first permanent house on what is now Main Street just west of present-day East First Street about November 7, 1848. They named their new settlement for the American union which had recently been formed between Great Britain and its former colonies in North America. The town grew rapidly because of its natural resources; timber, water supplies, and minerals were all important to early residents. In 1860, construction began on what became known as "the Town Hall" (later renamed "The Armory"), which housed both local government offices and a large grocery store/cafe complex that remain one of Union City's defining features today. In 1892 Union City became a city with a strong German component due to an influx of immigrants from Northern Germany who had come to work on railroad projects near Chatsworth during the late 19th century following California's gold rush celebrations that began December 12th, 1850 with discoveries at Sutter's Mill Activity Route #1 near Fillmore (now Hayward). At this time there were few restrictions on Germans working outside of Germany so many people decided to move here after hearing about opportunities for jobs and good environments available in California's great state capital cities like Sacramento or San Francisco despite some challenges such as high rents ($2 per month) at that time compared to comparably priced housing elsewhere in Northern California (and also much less competition). Today much credit goes given to headmaster Friedrich Engels who instigated daily flag ceremonies at Grades 1-12 school campuses throughout Los Angeles Unified School District starting back when he served as Superintendent beginning September 1958 until his retirement effective February 10th 1969 making him Emeritus Superintendent emeritus status within LUSD having started it long before then! As a result of this new technology Revolution (1885-1905), many jobs lost their traditional paychecks during this time period while others found difficulty staying afloat due to changes in business patterns brought about by new technologies such as electricity. These changes have significant impacts on both regional economies throughout North America as well ason individual towns within those regions
