Union City, California is a city in San Joaquin County, California, United States. The population was 47,549 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in San Joaquin County after Fresno. The first permanent settler in Union City was James Irvine on December 1, 1846. In 1855, when Nevada Territory was reorganized as statehood materialized some citizens wanted to keep their ranching operation independent of Sacramento so they formed the Rancho Cucamonga settlement west of present day Union City on March 14th joining hands with Ranchería de Nuestra Señora de la Paz about 8 miles eastward along State Route Ninety-Six (SR-96). That same year also saw annexation by Sacramento due to lack of response from local leaders when offered land grants from Governor Manuel Nieto instead upon statehood approval granted on November 3rd 1857 In 1861 an act created Alameda County adjoining San Francisco proper between Santa Clara River valley east side south side includingpresentunioncityand east side north side extending northeasterlytotheBay Bridge forming present Hayward county This area now includes Emeryville and Berkeley
