In 1871, a group of businessmen and politicians decided to move from San Francisco to establish a town in what is now Union City. They named their new community after General James H. Kearny, who had led the American Civil War and had been celebrated for his victory at Appomattox Court House. The townsite was developed by farmers and ranchers who used it for grazing land, but eventually began manufacturing goods such as saddles and firearms. By 1912, Union City had become an important center for agriculture because of its location near water supplies. The city also became home to many businesses that supplied goods to local residents and businesses. In 1934, the United States Congress passed the Gun Control Act which banned handguns within the United States entirely. This law caused a large backlash against Union City because many of its manufacturers ceased production immediately. This left San Bernardino County undeveloped and agricultural land dominated by Missionaries who were concentrated along both sides of the river River Redlands where they grew crops such as grapes and apples until about 1850 when wealthy Americans began buying up these lands creating towns like Claremont (now part of Pomona) or Victorville (now Jurupa Valley). By 1870 only one small citrus orchard remained in Union City while other than that no new development had taken place in over fifty years! In 1915 Standard Oil Company built their first refinery west of Los Angeles onshore adjacent to present day US 101 freeway south of downtown Union City making it one of the largest oil refineries east of LA! The company also constructed several factories including: AAF Aircraft Plants at Claremont(1915-1946), Hammer Industries at Victorville(1930-1945), Hewlett-Packard Company plant at Jurupa Valley(1965-1990) and JVC Corporation plant at Northridge (1988-) Today much younger businesses have replaced these older facilities with more recent plants bringing employment back into town; among them are Apple Inc., Pixar Animation Studios,heimertown Spa & Golf Resort (@ hvspaandgolfresort), Chubb Airways (@ chubbairlines), Costco Wholesale Club (@ coopwholesaleclubs) and KFC @ KFCCorp! A large amount of development occurred during World War II with many homes being built near military bases like Hawthorne Army Air Field northwest of town or Saugus Naval Base just outside town limits. In fact much later Union City would become home to two major aerospace manufacturing companies - Lockheed Martin Corp.}and McDonnell Douglas Corp.} On September 11th 1941 President Franklin D Roosevelt made history when he addressed a joint session of Congress from Capitol Hill calling for production quotas for planes produced by Boeing Co.} unions went out onto the streets across America protesting against this measure which led to escalating social unrest throughout most parts Of The USA } although not limited to Union City} }); Although some people continue argue that munitions production played no role whatsoever in 9/11 { nonetheless} our city erupted into flames following reports emanating from various sources alleging numerous explosives stores within blocks radius} }); Today's economy is based largely upon services such as healthcare, education, retail trade and software development
