On January 16, 1846, twelve days after Mexico achieved its independence from Spain, Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna declared himself Emperor of Mexico and ordered all Americans living in Mexican territory to leave within 72 hours or be burned alive. The town was founded by Jens Christensen on May 4th 1848 as Cedar Rapids because there were no trees available in Stockton for building homes. The first post office was established at Cedar Rapids on December 12th 1850. By 1860 there were ninety-seven businesses in Union City with a total payroll of $1 million dollars. In 1881 Union City had 5 churches and 35 schools In 1912 Union City became an incorporated city with a population of 30,000 residents A fire destroyed most of downtown on October 24th 1914 which killed 20 people and injured over 60 On February 3rd 1917 an earthquake struck north central California killing 43 people and injuring more than 500 On July 28th 1922 an even larger earthquake hit south central California causing damage to buildings up to 6 stories high throughout the entire city including many residences The largest store built in Union City until that time was the Armoury Building located at 400 Sutter Street which measured 22X28 feet On September 16th 1923 another large earthquake struck northeast Calaveras County resulting in extensive damage to both commercial buildings and residential areas including loss of lives among those who lived near by In 1933 Mayor John Larkin proposed creating what would become known as "the Great Depression" emergency measure that called for raising taxes by 25% only to have it repealed less than two weeks later when local businessmen coalition boycotted him because he did not support them
