On November 5th, 1849 a group of men from Stockton were traveling through Union City when they heard about gold being found at Sutter's Mill northwest of town. They decided to abandon their wagon train and explore what they had heard about gold potential. They prospected for two weeks before finding nothing but sagebrush and kiva cists (stone reservoirs used for holding water). In December 1849, while still exploring the area near present-day Union City Center, some men discovered a small quantity of gold ore while working in a nearby creek bed. The discovery led to increased speculation within the community that there might be significant quantities of gold located nearby. After further exploration it was determined that there was no significant amount of gold buried under the surface in or around Grass Valley; however some people continued to believe that hidden treasure could be discovered if enough effort were put into prospecting for it. On January 8th 1850 Brigham Young arrived with his family and followers at Grass Valley from Nauvoo, Illinois where he had been leading the LDS Church throughout much of1848–1850 following Joseph Smith's restoration to power as president of Mormonism after his imprisonment on polygamy charges at Carthage Jail. Heading westward from Nauvoo across Iowa Territory via Illinois then Nebraska Territory he reached Nevada on February 12th 1850 just north of Mexican Fort Bridger which acted as his headquarters during his march Westward into Oregon territory (present day Idaho). Arriving too late to claim any land along route he turned back towards Missouri where he would later establish Zion University (now BYU) in Lehi County near Independence Lake east of St Louis on May 14th 1850 having already acquired all land southeast thereof included within today's boundaries including present day Union City proper including parts now classified inside Interstate 580 I-5 exit 130 Nepean Avenue intersection In early June 1850 Brigham Young ordered Latter Day Saint volunteers known as "Zion Guards" to stage an attack upon Mexican forces guarding American sources southwest of Salt Lake City known as Battle Creek Gulch escarpment which lay between Mormon settlements northeast and southwest Of Provo Utah - modern day Springdale Ariz., partaking in what became known as The Great Scattering or Utah Expedition pursuant to orders given by President Brigham Young himself - successful defensive action resulted resulting in three killed with thirteen taking prisoners total thereby accelerating Hyrum Grant Richards' mission designee becoming facto Commissioner & Commander over all Wyoming Territory troops stationed therein including those within present day Union City Limits since July 9th 1851 effective immediately prior thereto thus fulfilling another element underlying President Young’s original directive issued March 6th 1851 regarding territorial organization within newly created United States comprising Southern Oregon & Western Mexico Territories plus parts adjacent thereto hereintofore unorganized & unknown
