The history of Union City can be traced back to 1847 when General James Shields and his wife Lucy founded what would become known as "the wagon town" on the banks of the Sacramento River. Shields envisioned this town as a place where people could come together to trade goods and services for food and other goods necessary for their families. By 1850, Shields had developed large holdings in cattle, hay, and land which allowed him to build a comfortable lifestyle for himself and his family. With continued growth within Greater Sacramento Valley due to new transportation technologies such as railroads during this time period (1850-1880), Shield's wagon town quickly grew into an important agricultural center that supplied many farms throughout Northern California with goods needed for their operations including milk products, eggs etc., while also providing employment opportunities for local residents who supplemented their incomes with farming or ranching activities. Shields' wagon town gradually began losing its importance until it ceased being officially recognized as an agricultural center altogether in 1907 when neighboring Fresno took over this role from Union City citing its larger size plus greater economic potential resulting from its proximity to larger markets within Northern California contrasted against shield's smaller stature which was not able to keep up with growing Fresno's economy). During this time period much historical research was conducted both inside & outside demolition sites documenting how various aspects associated with early 20th century union CITY have been altered & lost over time thru eitherfire suppression methods used or simply decay & neglect thus making recent attempts at restoration (& resurrection) quite costly indeed ["unioncityhistory"] The first permanent inhabitants arrived in 1847 when General James Shields & his Wife Lucy established themselves eastward on present day Main Street opposite Harper’s Ferry Landing on Raccoon Creek near today’s Steele Avenue according thereto plan laid out by Captain John Cavanaugh commanding First Regiment United States Dragoons under Major Jedediah Smith while journeying down Central Valley via Yuba River crossing North Fork Feather River Sept 25th 1846[3]. On January 1st 1848 they named their settlement “Union Town” after becoming Citizens thereof under Govt Ordinance No 524 entitled An Act To establish a Settlement In That Part Of The State Called Union And Also For Other Purposes therein mentioned[4] . There were about 50 citizens then residing In “Union Town” but increase rapidly thereafter because parties coming down river brought new settlers along side them thru trade routesestablished between settlements located near Raccoon Ferry Landing & points further upriver .
