In 1851, Union City was founded by Captain George Goodwin and his family on the San Andreas Fault. At first, the town was a small farming community with few buildings other than barns and homes. But as railroads came to Union City and other communities in California, business picked up and soon there were businesses such as a grocery store, post office, hotel, and cotton gin along with sawmills and factories. The population of Union City grew rapidly from around 100 in 1850 to 2,500 by 1860. By 1870, the city had outgrown its original downtown area which is now known as Old Town Union City. In 1875, the city established a waterworks that provided potable water for residents. The city also built a sewage system which still functions today. During World War I, Union City made significant contributions through its production of munitions such as machine guns and ammunition. After the war ended in 1918 however, many businesses closed due to economic difficulties during wartime times. However, some of these businesses reopened after the recession hit in 1929-30 but eventually went out of business again during the Great Depression. This left Union City without any major industry or trade unions until World War II when it began manufacturing tanks for America’s war effort. Union City experienced an influx of new immigrants over time which helped spur growth in various industries including architecture and engineering because these fields needed workers who could speak English well enough to do their jobs effectively (Lambert).
