As businesses prospered along Main Street in Belle Haven people started calling themselves “Union Jacks” due to their patriotism towards United States during this time period By 1886 business had developed so much so that residents adopted “City Councilman” style government with Peter Kroeber serving as Mayor from 1888 through 1893 followed by Gassendi from 1895-1898 then Lester Wages from 1899-1901 . On December 5th 1901 Samuel Morse set up shop at 6th & E Streets NW becoming one of only two U.S.-owned radio stations outside New York Harbor before closing down operations six months later due to financial difficulties .
