Ukiah is a small town located in Mendocino County, California. The community was founded in 1853 by Captain James Montgomery and his family. Ukiah has been a thriving agricultural center since the early 1800s, and today it is an important cultural and commercial center. The population of Ukiah was 9,868 as of 2010. The first settlers to Ukiah were Captains James Montgomery and John Brougham. They arrived in 1853 and built the first post office at what is now the Parkside Shopping Center. In 1854, Captains Montgomery and Brougham organized a company to sale goods from their farm on the east side oftown to customers across the county. This early business venture helped spawn many of today’s businesses in Ukiah – some of which still operate today such as A & P grocery store, hardware store, doctor’s office, restaurant, etc. In 1860, Captain Montgomery erected a sawmill on his property that continues to produce lumber today. In 1865-1866 Major General David Dixon led an invasion of Mendocino County with orders to destroy any competing ranching interests in the area. As part of this campaign he destroyed many buildings including the old post office building (now known as Ukiah Bank). The townspeople responded by erecting a new structure on Church Street just south of downtown – this building still standstoday as one of Ukiah’s most recognizable landmarks! Colonel Edward Sibley visitedukia in 1872 during his attempt to open up trade with China so that wine could be exported from Ukiah into Asia. He purchased several acres adjacent to present day Market Square for $5 per acre! This purchase did much to revive growth withinthe town after years of stagnation! In 1896 Congress passed an act providing for public school instruction within the boundariesof Mendocino County; this event markedthe beginning ofukia’s current period as a thriving educational center! Today there are over 350 public schools operatingin Ukiah; many students come from all over Californiato attend these programs! During World War II,ukia served its role singlehandedly as an airfield servicing local flying clubs throughout Mendocino County while other towns aroundthe county took advantageof available resources suchas water storage tanks or dumps for enemy munitions production sites. After hostilities ended ukia reverted backto its original agricultural roots with crops such as beansand tomatoes being grown abundantly! However during recent decades there have been numerous developmentprojects taking place within ukia includingTheUkaiapark (2006), Senate Park (2008), Plaza Lomas (2005), North CampusDevelopment(2007)and more recently South Campus Development(2009). All these projects bring about increased trafficand economic prosperityto Ukia – making it one of Northern California’s most vibrant communities

In 1850, British explorer and naturalist George Vancouver explored the area and named it after Utopia, an imaginary island he found off the coast of California.
