The area now known as Ukiah was first inhabited by Native Americans when Europeans started to visit this region in the early 1800s. One group of these people were the Ohlone who built their settlements around what is now downtown Ukiah in 1827-28. In 1848, Jedediah and Samuel Ukiah purchased land east of what is now downtown from Nicholas Doane and began to build a small settlement called Ukiah on it. They named their new town after John C Fremont because he had been Governor of California at that time and they hoped that this would help promote trade with nearby villages such as Santa Cruz and Monterey. The town quickly grew into a busy commercial center with a variety of businesses including gristmill, wagon train stop, ferry landing, post office and school (now Community College). In 1850, the town had about 25 residents; however by 1860 it had reached 100 residents and by 1870 it had grown to 200+.
