Ukiah is a small town located in Mendocino County, California, United States. The population was 729 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Ukiah–Wormsetter Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Ukiah were the Russians in 1821 and they named it Uquia after their ship, Ural (окупы). In 1825, Joshua Haughs erected a store and post office on Station Road. The first school in Ukiah was built in 1827 by James Manson. In 1838, John Sutter came to Ukiah from Sacramento with his cattle and landed on what is now Point Reyes Station. He founded Sutter's Fort here and named it for himself and his wife Elizabeth Sutter (née Willard). In 1861, David Jones arrived from San Francisco with two horses and started trading goods with the Nisqually people. He built a cabin near the present day Depot Street and called it "Jonesville". On November 30, 1861, he married Catherine Wright at Jonesville; she was the daughter of Samuel Wright of Dixonville, California. They had one child: Alice Cogswell (1862-1937). In 1865-66 Alexander Graham Bell undertook an experiment which demonstrated telephone service between San Francisco and Oakland using horse power only; this event helped spur development of radio technology later that year. In 1870, building began on what would become known as "the Great Northern Railroad", which linked Napa Valley to Seattle through Ukiah; this railroad led to increased trade throughout much of California during the early 20th century. John Fenton opened a grocery store at 5th Avenue & Center Street in 1903 which became Fenton's Supermarket chain until its sale to Safeway in 2006. From 1906 until 1918 there were three schools operated by Mendocino County: Hill School District #1 (later renamed North Coast School District), Central School District #2 (later renamed Ukiah Union High School), and East Mendocino Union High School District #3 where students could attend either public or private schools depending on family income levels; these schools eventually merged into one school system when Mendocino County established its own education department in 1928 On July 4th 1908 Mayor Harry Heaton of Los Angeles proclaimed "Republic Day" in honor of America's first native son George Washington who had died less than two months earlier while attending Tuskegee Institute drama camp north of Mobile Alabama while serving as Commandant General American Troops during World War I aged just 25 years old according to contemporary sources
Ukiah, California was founded in 1795 by Captain John Smith. The town was named for the Ukiah River which flows through it. It became a post office in 1853 and an incorporated city in 1893. In 1916, the United States Census reported that Ukiah had a population of 397. The population grew to 527 by 1980 and 946 by 2010.
