The first settlement in Ukiah was on the peninsula by Bay View Fur trader John Brougham in 1847. A post office called Ukiah was established in 1853, and became a town in 1865. The name change to Ukiah after President Ulysses S Grant visited the town on his way to visit Mexico City during his term as president. Ukiah is named after Samuel Winchester, who married Mary Bacon daughter of Sir George Bacon, 1st Viscount Shannon. Winchester developed land here and built a house here which still stands today known as the Sam Winchester House. In 1851 he donated land for what would become college park now called University Park and founded USU (University of California) here with other donations including surplus livestock from Yale University's New Haven campus. After university admission requirements were introduced at Stanford University (then part of Palo Alto), Ukiah students rioted on November 9th, 1881 because they felt that their school should have been admitted too; this event is also sometimes referred to as "the night of the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir". On July 3rd, 1922 USU graduated its first class with distinction when James EASTMAN received his LLB degree from UC Berkeley; Alice LEE also graduated magna cum laude with her undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley two years later! In 1941 Japan bombed Pearl Harbor causing America involvement in World War II; however Japan soon signed unconditional surrender and all forces left without any significant damage being done to either side within or outside Japan proper - thus ending World War II! Since then much has changed within and around Ukiah including: The city annexed part of unincorporated Pacifica County in 1978 making it one municipality The opening of Interstate 880 created new jobs opportunities for locals as truck drivers and local businesses began using I-880 for travel south In recent years there has been an effort underway by many citizens to redevelop much of downtown into a more pedestrian friendly environment characterized by open space between buildings instead of large containers used for industrial purposes
