Ukiah, California is a small town in Mendocino County, California. The population was 992 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1851 by Captain James Irvine and his wife Anna Maria as Ukiah Station on the Russian River. The name Ukiah comes from two Native American words - "u-kia" meaning 'water' and "wahi" or 'farmstead'. Captain Irvine named it after his home county of Yorkshire, England. In 1862, the United States Post Office moved to Ukiah from Redding because of its larger population. During World War II, Ukiah supplied materials for the war effort including gasoline and munitions. In 1951, the post office closed but continued to serve as a community center until 1978 when it became part of Mendocino County Parks system. On October 25th 1861, Captain James Irvine and his wife AnnaMaria founded Ukiah Station on the Russian River near present day Antioch with an initial goal of trading goods with Russians living along that stretch of river. From their small cabin they soon developed a large farmstead which stretched over 5 square miles (12 km2). They raised beef cattle, pigs, horses, chickens and other poultry; farmed corn; conducted whaling operations on their river estuary; manufactured pottery items such as jars and mugs; constructed several crude homes for themselves and others within their first few years in operation; built up brickworks close to their farmstead for local use during dry months only when there were no rains enough to renew crops locally; Harper's Ferry Agreement had just been signed between Russia and Ulysses S Grant which led to increased trade opportunities along this stretch of river so they were able to remain profitable even during times of drought/hard times Captain James Irvine passed away in 1865 but his wife continued running her farmstead until her death in 1903. His widow's daughter took over management until her daughter's death in 1916 then hand-held management until 1948 when it was transferred back under state ownership before becoming part of Mendocino County Parks system In 1951, after post office closure due to lack of mail traffic, citizens banded together formed a committee which drafted legislation creating Mendocino County Parks system with responsibility for all public land within its boundaries . On January 1st 1958 public vote placed control over park systems within Mendocino County into hands of newly created county board members who would manage them according as needed while continuing to provide funding through special assessments levied against property owners located within certain areas . On November 15th 1959 both Santa Clara Valley Water District (SCVWD) eastern branch and parts west were transferred from Monterey County under same governance arrangement with SCVWD assuming jurisdiction over those branches east & west respectively . At that time there were still 2 counties – Mendocino & San Francisco – each managing 3rd party water districts that provided piped water services primarily within their respective boundaries The creation of parks allowed people more access to nature while also providing places where families could gather together around firesides or picnics without fear of being targets by outlaws or developers looking for new business opportunities outside the parks boundary
Ukiah was founded by Captain John A. Folsom in 1851 as a small agricultural community on the Ukiah Peninsula. The town grew rapidly, and by 1865 it had reached its present size of nearly 20,000 people. In the early years of the 20th century, Ukiah was an important center foruminum production and for shipbuilding. During World War II, the town became a major Manufacturing District due to its location at the mouth of the Clayton Canal.
