On December 6, 1850, the California Legislature passed an act establishing Ukiah as a incorporated town with a population of 10 individuals. The town initially functioned as a small cultural center for the region and developed its own economy based on trade with other towns in Northern California. In 1912,Ukiah merged with neighboring Amador County to form the new county of Mendocino County.
