Ukiah, California is a town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 10,844 at the 2010 census. The name Ukiah comes from Wuk-kah (a Native American word meaning "place where the salmon run") and was given to it by Captain John C. Fremont in 1847 while he was exploring the Sacramento Valley. The first permanent settler in what is now Ukiah was James Fenton in 1848. He built a small cabin on the north bank of the Orinoco River and named his new settlement after his brother-in-law, Ulysses S. Grant. In 1850, George Hearn began working on a road from Stockton to Bakersfield and traveled through Ukiah on his way back from farm work; he called the village Hahwah for its resemblance to a running fish. In 1851–52, about sixty settlers started arriving in what is now Ukiah through various auspices including donations of land by individuals or groups such as Mrs. Anna Atkins and Drs., Augustus Earle and William Tilton among others They had difficulty finding enough food to sustain themselves so they set up huts made of poles covered with dirt or leaves thatched roofs until they could find more fertile ground nearby By 1860 there were over two hundred people living in what is now Ukiah The addition of water power enabled commercial farming and early development of local wine production began In 1865 an unsuccessful attempt was made to establish a railroad through Ukiah but this failed due to objections by some residents who saw it as an opportunity for developers to come into their community without having to build anything . Development stopped until World War II when new housing developments came online . After that time there were increases in population due to migration from surrounding cities . Today there are over ten thousand people living here
Ukiah was founded in 1851 by Nicholas and Anna Folsom. The town was named for their daughter Ukiah (pronounced "you-kuh-hah"), who married a local young man. In 1865, the town became part of the new California Territory. It remained an unincorporated community until 1957 when it incorporated as a town under the name of Ukiah.
