Bipedalism has been present in the Ukiah Valley for at least 5,000 years. The first evidence of bipedalism comes from tools and bones dating back to the Gravettian period. Between 509 and 476 BC, two groups of Hohokam Indians lived in what is now Ukiah. One group was known as the Pomo and the other as the Ohlone. At some point, these two groups amalgamated to form one culture. In 176 BC, British explorer John Clements discovered a base camp on Mount Hamilton in Ukiah Valley and named it Fort George after King George III of England. In 1847, an American party led by Edwin Mather explored Ukiah Valley and named it Utopia because they were looking for a new home for their countrymen who had recently lost their land to California gold seekers. Bipedality gradually spread throughout North America until it reached its peak during the Paleo-Indian period about 10,500 years ago. This era was marked by tool-making techniques that required both hands to use certain tools such as spears and shelters. Ukiah (pronounced "yoo-kuh-hah") is a small town located in the Yuba River valley of Southern California. The population was 5,821 at the 2010 census. The first European settlers arrived in 1827, when Captain George Vancouver explored what is now Ukiah Peninsula on his way back from China. They named their land Ukiah after Captain Vancouver's brother, who had been commandant of one of British Columbia's two fur trading posts on the peninsula. In 1851, A.H. Agassiz visited Ukiah and recommended that the town be named after him because he had discovered an oil well there while exploring for gold near Oroville Dam in 1848. settlement began in earnest around this time with many farmers coming to find a location where they could drill for oil under hills west of present-day downtown Ukiah. By 1870, most people living in Ukiah were farmers; only a small percentage were miners or fishermen who relied on local rivers for water supply and food storage. During World War II, much activity took place at nearby Livermore National Laboratory due to plutonium production at Los Alamos National Laboratory then being conducted by General Electric Company across town next door at Livermore East Site #2 (now known as Rancho San Ramon Cemetery). Many buildings still remain from that time including GE factory headquarters which housed scientists responsible for developing radar and other electronics products during the war years including development of America's first guided missile: Lockheed Martin's P-38 Lightning fighter aircraft! Additionally, many prominent Californians such as General James Marshall arrived in Ukiah during this time to start new businesses or serve as government officials. During the late 1800s and early 1900s,ukiah experienced significant economic prosperity thanks to its location within easy reach of both San Francisco and Los Angeles. However, due to global events such as World War II and other political changesover time,the fortunes of the town slowly began to decline until they reached their current low point during the Great Recession-era in 2007-2010."Ukiah's economy has been significantly harmed by globalization since then," said Mayor Kurt Sorenson."However we are working hard to rebound with new investment opportunities through our ambitious planning process."
Ukiah is located in the Central Valley of California and was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. The town was founded on November 14, 1847 by Capt. George H. Stanford and his men after they discovered gold near Ukiah Creek. The town rapidly grew into a small city and became an important center for wine production in California before becoming a major transportation hub during the early 20th century. In 1931, Ukiah was merged with nearby Santa Clara to form the City of Santa Clara County.
