In 1955, Ukiah joined the United States (US) Atomic Energy Commission and became one of its five towns located within Sacramento County. In 1957, it became an incorporated village with full voting rights and representation on the town board. On November 5, 1968, voters passed a ballot measure approving plans for nuclear power development in town center near where the US-based Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant would be built.
