P Harmon founded a school here which served as the first public school in Mendocino County. In 1884 the town post office was moved to its present location and continued to serve until it closed in 1925. In 1915 the United States Post Office Department renamed Ukiah "Oshkosh" after Oshkosh, Wisconsin's capital city then being within that county limits and also located on the Menomonee River adjacent to Ukiah Lake. Oshkosh had previously been called Green Bay due to its fertile agricultural land and early growth thereabouts; however this name no longer applies outside of Wisconsin where it remains unofficially honored by the US Postal Service
Ukiah, California was founded in 1847 by Captain George Ukiah and his wife Nannie. The town was named after the U.K. island of Uki (now part of Japan). The first post office was established in 1848, and the first store opened in 1850. In 1856, the town had a population of about 100 people and a School House. In 1861, Ukiah became an incorporated city with a population of about 500 people. The first mayor was Wm. Hargrave. In 1865, the City Council enacted legislation providing for public education in the town; this law led to increased development within the community and eventual growth as a major regional center for trade and industry.
