It is part of the San Fernando Valley region and is adjacent to Burbank and Glendale. In 1802, President James K. Polk sent Captain John Sutter through Twentynine Palms on his way to explore what lay beyond the Great Lakes. The name stuck until 1906 when it was changed back to Spanish by Mayor Fenton Price in order to attract settlers who wanted a Californian name with an established history like San Bernardino or Pasadena would have acquired if they had chosen another one such as Santa Barbara or Orange County instead. Twentynine Palms, California was founded on December 21, 1891 by developer P.J. Gallagher and his wife Lillie. The town was named for the Palms of San Diego County which were then part of Mexico. The first post office in Twentynine Palms opened on January 7, 1892. The first store in Twentynine Palms was a general store owned by John Atherton. In 1896, the town had only six residents and no businesses. However, development continued to grow in Twentynine Palms with the opening of a bank in 1902 and the construction of a water tower in 1907
