It is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario metropolitan area. The name "Twentynine Palms" is derived from twenty-one coins given to the town by 21 U.S. presidents dating back to 1881. The land that would become Twentynine Palms was purchased by James Irvine in 1892 as part of Rancho San Gabriel property that he had acquired from Juan Bautista de Anza. On July 8, 1893, Irvine sold 640 acres (247 hectares) of land to his brother John Waddell for $4,500 and an annuity of $10 per year. This purchase extended Irvine's holdings northward into what is now Riverside County and eastward into Orange County.(1) Waddell named his new rancho "San Gabriel", which was shortened to "Twentynine Palms" in 1896 when local residents began calling it simply "Palm Springs". In November 1912 a group of businessmen led by William Condon organized a meeting at Palm Springs to discuss forming a townsite association for Palm Springs Valley.(2) They decided upon the name Twentynine Palms because there were then only nineteen United States states (not including California), and twenty two territories (not including Mexico). The first post office opened in 1913 with the name Arroyo Seco Beach.(3) As development moved forward, other names were considered such as Desert Hills and Indian Wells before settling on Twentynine Palms because it sounded more like something America would be famous for - like Hollywood or New York City.(4) During World War I Thalhimer Aircraft Corporation built an airfield adjacent to present day Arroyo Seco Boulevard on what became known as Rancho Mirage Field; this contributed significantly to growth during World War II due to war production needs at nearby Los Angeles Air Force Base.(5) In 1948 Twentynine Palms incorporated as a city under the terms of State law No. 5551(6)(7)(8). By 1960 its population had reached 20,000 people and by 1987 it reached 30,000 people who made their home within City limits according to City Manager Darrell Issa’s report “city boundaries subject primarily thereto have changed very little since incorporation”.�9 City services currently provided include water service (through Fountain Valley Utilities), trash collection/management, fire protection (twenty one alarms), public works operations including street cleaning/maintenance/paving Streetscape improvements have also been completed throughout 2018 through 2019 with most projects slated for completion prior Year 2020.� These investments are critical not only due to preserving our streetscapes but alsoCurbing pollution which impacts everyone�s quality of life.�
