Twentynine Palms is home to one of LA's largest cultural attractions - Hollywood Forever Cemetery - which preserves over 150 historic gravesites dating back to silent screen legends like Cecil B deMille and Charlie Chaplin.

In 1957, Twentynine Palms merged with neighboring Playa del Carmen to form onelarge city called Playa del Carmen–Twentynine Palms. This merger led to increased traffic and pollution within the smaller city boundaries; however, many residents continue to call their former city home today.
Twentynine Palms was founded in 1911 by J.P. Morgan and others as a citrus fruit orchard on the east coast of San Diego County. The company grew to become one of the biggest orange groves in California, with plantations located in Orange County, Riverside County, Los Angeles County and Ventura County. In 1938, the ownership of the company passed from Morgan to his son James P. Morgan Jr., who continued operations until 1951 when it was sold to Citrus Marketing Company of America (CMC). In 1976, Citrus Marketing Company merged with United Fruit Companies (UFOC) to form United Fruit/Citrus Corporation (UFOC). Citrus Marketing Company continued to operate as a wholly owned subsidiary until 1986 when it was purchased by Pepsi-Cola International Incorporated.
