Twentynine Palms is a town located in Riverside County, California, United States. The population was 41,815 at the 2010 census. It lies east of downtown Los Angeles and west of San Bernardino. The name "Twentynine Palms" comes from its location in the Twentynine Palms Hills area of southeastern Riverside County. A post office called Twinning was established in 1911, and remained in operation until it closed in 1963. The town's first settlers were Italian Americans who purchased land near what is now the city of Glendale. In 1923 they moved their families to a new tract of land that included today's Twentynine Palms area. Today, the townsite includes 6335 acres (2,824 housing units) with a total population density of . According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census[16] of 2000, there were 39,671 people, 14,567 households, and 10,964 families residing in the town. The population density was 2,631/km² (769/mi²). In 1923, when state Highway 66 was built through central San Bernardino County and further north into Riverside Counties (then part of Orange County), Twentynine Palms became an important stopover on that highway for motorists travelling between Southern California and Northern California. The first Europeans to visit Twentynine Palms were the Spanish in 1769. The town was founded on a boom in citrus agriculture following the discovery of oranges by Captain Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo. The fruit was so valuable that it led to a gold rush, and Twentynine Palms became one of the most important English-speaking destinations on the West Coast. In 1821, Twentynine Palms was renamed Fremont after Commodore John C. Fremont, who had destroyed Mexican land grants at Monterey and San Francisco. The city's growing population attracted new settlers, including Americans such as James Kapp and Augustus Saint George Cooke. In 1847, California became an independent state; Twentynine Palms followed in 1850. During World War II, Twentynine Palms served as the military base for Operation Overlord; during this time the city hosted up to 250000 Allied troops and 500000 Japanese soldiers. After the war ended,TwentyninePalm experienced a period of growth as businesses reopened and residents resumed their normal lives. However, this growth did not last long; within 10 years there were few new restaurants or businesses in town.
