Twentynine Palms is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 30,060 at the 2010 census. It is the second largest city in San Bernardino County after Riverside. The site of present-day Twentynine Palms was once part of Rancho Niguel Mexican land grant given to José Gabriel María de Jesús Sepúlveda in 1836 by Governor Manuel Micheltorena. The City of Orange began to be formed as a result of the annexation of parts of Riverside on July 1, 1907. On November 3, 1912, voters adopted a resolution creating an orange juice company town within boundaries defined by then-Riverside Mayor James Phelan and City Councilmember John Masterson. That company town name change to Twentynine Palms when that company became Synovus Pacific Co., Incorporated on December 15, 1912. On May 5, 1916 District Attorney Harry Laughlin announced his decision not to pursue charges against O’Neill for perjury during an impeachment trial against President Woodrow Wilson because there was insufficient evidence that he had ever done anything improper or illegal while serving as Deputy District Attorney for Los Angeles County; instead Laughlin announced plans toFile charges only if possible based on circumstantial evidence rather than through a criminal trial where jurors would have been able to assess credibility issues related to O’Neill's behavior while prosecutor and judge alike might have had personal stakes in decisions made about prosecutions (Laughlin did file criminal charges against O'Neill). On October 14th 1917 much earlier than planned due principally to World War I military mobilization Twentynine Palms residents held an election for mayor which resulted In John Fenton becoming the first African American Mayor of Southern California having been elected before white suffrage laws were changed from party affiliation into civil rights status effective January 6th 1919). As with most matters affecting Negroes at this time there was considerable political controversy over how “integrated” the new community should be seen and felt – some believed it should become purely black while others wanted more responsiveness from white business proprietors who were already beginning feel pressure associated with newly open racial attitudes throughout America towards similar changes taking place within their own communities (Fenton served two terms until he resigned effective April 4th 1923 due largely to health problems caused by years living in close quarters with other people of color)). In 1925 white flight began resulting in many businesses moving away leavingTwentynine Palms almost entirely African American; however various business ventures continue up until the early 1970s including several successful blackowned stores before local blacks lost ownership/control following race riots occurring throughout southern California during this period).
