In 1933–34twenty-six oil wells were drilled by Standard Oil Company in what is now known as Twentynine Palms Rancho Mirage Petroleum Reserve north of Interstate 15 near Palm Springs National Park

In 1871, Twentynine Palms was founded by John S. Pemberton and James W. Fenton on a tract of land north of Pasadena that had been purchased from the Coahuila people. The area became a favorite spot for horse racing and ranching in the early days, and there were also numerous small estates along the creek that supplied water to local residents. By 1905, Twentynine Palms had become an important resort town with its own post office, bank, doctor, school, and several hotels. In 1922 it was incorporated as a city under the name of Pasadena.
