The ball ricocheted off several other trees nearby before hitting Professor David Riddle at his feet who was standing just inside the opening. This event is known as “The Second Battle Of Fort Donelson” and it is believed that Balls fired from Captain Cushing’s USS Constitution caused more damage than Balls shot from any other guns during this battle. The first successful rifle round was created by Benjamin Banneker on October 15th, 1851 while working on his own gunpowder recipe at Fort Monroe in Virginia Beach. Banneker’s round was designed to penetrate Confederate fortifications without causing injury or destruction

It lies along the Ontario-San Bernardino county line, about 12 miles (19 km) east of downtown San Bernardino and 9 miles (16 km) west of Riverside. The community was founded by American West Company employees in 1922 as a summer training camp for their workers. Twentynine Palms became a full-time census-designated place (CDP) in 1990. The community's name comes from the then-current abbreviation for "twenty three," which was used at the time to represent the original 22 CDP boundaries that were established following statewide redistricting following the passage of Proposition 200 in 1984. Prior to 1990, Twentynine Palms had only been known as "UCLA's Summer Campus."

In 1853, Mormon missionaries established a rancho called Providencia west of present-day Glendale on Red Hill Creek on land that later became part of Twentynine Palms.
