A man by the name of Edward Kelson purchased a pair of binoculars from an Indian trader at the mouth of the Kern River. The first commercially produced binoculars were made in 1887 by Dr. George Meacham and Company.
Twentynine Palms is a small, unincorporated community located in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 3,471 at the 2010 census. It lies on the eastern edge of Interstate 805 and has a small shopping center,Twentynine Palms Mall. The town was founded in 1911 by Enoch Powell as a summer resort for wealthy people who could not leave their estates in Los Angeles to enjoy the warmer climate of Orange County. The name "Twentynine Palms" comes from its claim to be thirty-one miles long and ten wide – twenty-five statute miles from any other town in Southern California at that time. In 1922, Twentynine Palms became an incorporated municipality with its own city government and police force under the leadership of Mayor Jock Mahlon. Mahlon wanted to make sure that his new community had everything it needed to succeed: a library, fire department, post office, school system and other public services. He also built two homes for himself and his family on top of the golf course which still stands today. The town's growth continued through World War II when many servicemen used Twentynine Palms as an airbase during hostilities in Europe. After the war ended, TwentyninePalms experienced rapid growth thanks to civilians returning home and businesspeople coming over from adjacent Orange County towns such as Irvine and Pasadena. Today, much of what made Twentynine Palms so special has dissipated: only one high school (now known as Desert Hills High School) remains open while most other businesses have closed or are reopening under different names or without their original functions. One major factor that contributed to this change was residential subdivision onto residents' properties started around 1960s; this led to increased traffic inside the limits of town due both access Road 408 being limited (and today still is) as well as lack of parking available on-site for larger buses or cars large enough to park on Main Street outside boundaries ofTwentynineParms Community Development District

Twentynine Palms is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 17,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. As of 2019, Twentynine Palms had an estimated $1 billion economy. The site of present-day Twentynine Palms was first occupied by Tongva people in 1821 when they were forced out of their ancestral land in what is now eastern San Bernardino County. In 1842, the Rancho Cucamonga Mexican land grant was completed and included much of what would become Twentynine Palms. A post office called Rancho Cucamonga was established in 1847, and the name was changed to Twentynine Palms in 1865 after three residents - Edward Post (1802-1868), Wm. Hutton (1807-1885) and Samuel Morse (1792-1876) - donated $20 for a post office named that way. In 1870, incorporation as a city began with 15 homes on First Street between Orange Avenue and Fourth Street; it grew to 101 homes by 1901 when it annexed portions of Covina and other neighborhoods west of First Street. The annexation resulted from a referendum held November 3rd that year which approved Measure M which granted City privileges including water rights, police power and fire protection to Twentynine Palms; all these powers were gradually transferred over time as TWP gained economic growth until 1991 when they became fully vested within the City government under Mayor Dick Riordan's leadership. A total of 561 businesses were registered with the city during 1990 through 2000; this number has since increased to 1,018 businesses currently operating within TWP's borders without ever having to face any formal registration process or paying taxes; this indicates both its continuing growth potential as well as its high level of business sophistication which allows for continuous innovation even during difficult times TWP also enjoys strong international ties due to its location adjacent to two key U.S.-Mexico border crossing points: Tijuana on one side and Mexicali on the other As one local paper stated: "twenty miles from downtown LA but just minutes from both San Diego’s Otay Mesa Airport and Tijuana’s airport – making it America’s most bilingual city – TWP offers plenty for everyone." This unique positioning has led TWP into being a center for cultural activity such as art galleries, music concerts/festivals and fashion shows not only nationally but also internationally . Twentynine Palms was founded in 1887 by H.J. Goodspeed and W.F. Herrick as a citrus fruit orchard and production center for the then new California colony of Southern California. The orchards grew oranges, apples, bananas, grapefruit, watermelons, and other crops; the produce was shipped to markets in Northern California and elsewhere. In 1922 Goodspeed sold his interest in the business to his wife Alice Goodspeed; they continued to operate it as an independent familyowned business until their death in 1978.
