On November 15, 1961, the first Tustin expansion mount was installed on a truck at the original location of the Eagle-Lodge Inn. The first Tustin telescope mount system was developed by E.A. Salerno and Fortunato Tozzi and became operational in 1965. The original mounts were made from two round posts that swiveled to allow for various viewing angles. In 1969, a new design was created that allowed for an extra 8” diagonal of aperture with an adjustable armillary sphere focuser and it became known as the "Tozzi" system. In 1978, a new 2 man turret was added to increase manpower at the observatory while also allowing more powerful telescopes to be used including the Keck I Telescope which replaced the Tozzi system in 1984. In 1998, additional expansion mounts were installed on three trucks totaling 18 mounting locations making it possible to install even more powerful telescopes in one go!
