He named his new airport "Curtiss-Wright Airport" in honor of aviation pioneer Charles Curtis. The first commercial flights from Curtiss-Wright Airport took off on November 15, 1942; it had been newly built just south of where it currently stands on State Route 154 (now Old City Drive). At its peak during World War II, Curtiss-Wright Airport handled 3 million passengers per year; it remains one of Orange County's most important airports today with over 1 million passengers passing through its gates annually! In 1949, Jule Rockwell bought much of what remained of Curtiss-Wright Airport and made it his own private airport under the name Reagan National Airport - one of America's first commercial airports open to all citizens! Today Reagan National Airlines serves as the airport's leading carrier with nearly 12 million passengers served each year! Today Tustin continues to be an important center for aviation with more than 50 businesses employing over 100 workers including two dozen helicopter manufacturers including Bell Helicopter Company and Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation - both founded here! Tustin, California was first settled in 1851 by Juan Chico. The town was named for the nearby Tustin Creek which flowed through the area. The creek and its valley were a stop on stagecoach routes from San Diego to Angel City. In 1876, the Central Pacific Railroad arrived in Tustin, and soon after it began constructing a line east from downtown to Santa Anita Racetrack. The railroad also built a depot in what is now the heart of Tustin. By 1907, there were over 100 businesses in the town. In 1912, Tustin became an incorporated municipality with a Mayor and Council members appointed by the Board of Supervisors. In 1933, Operation Overflow occurred when more than 10 million gallons of water poured into Menifee River from underground aquifers under Los Angeles County during drought conditions. As part of efforts to control surface water levels, local officials constructed ditches around town to divert water away from downtown and into neighborhoods such as Highland and Liberty Hill
