In 1864, General John B.[sic] Kearny established an artillery battery at Fort Santa Ana in order to defend against Confederate attacks along the coast of Southern California. The battery remained in use until 1886 when it was decommissioned and its guns sold off. In 1892, the first privategun company in Orange County, called Coon's Cave Rifle & Pistol Club, was formed at 4th Street and Sarno Avenue. The club functioned until 1907 when it disbanded because of financial problems. The shooting field at 3rd Street and Sarno Avenue became home to Tustin Riflemen from 1912 until 1916 when it closed due to World War I complications. In 1916, Tustin Gun Club opened at 5th Street and Sarno Avenue which operated until 1949 when it merged with another gun club located nearby - La Jolla Riflemen - forming Tustin Shooting Association Incorporated which continued operations through 1959. The last gun show held in Tustin occurred in 1959; however, rifle range activity has continued sporadically ever since with various events taking place throughout the year including Open Air shootings that take place during summer months around campus or on location outdoors whenever possible
The town of Tustin, California is located in the southcentral part of Orange County. The population as of the 2010 census was 11,824. The name "Tustin" was given to the town by an American gold prospector, Elisha Kent Cooke. He named his new mining camp "Tustin" after the phrase "the best land in all California." The first settlement in what is now Tustin occurred on December 21, 1877 when some men from San Diego met with a group of Mexicans who had crossed the border into California from Baja California. They built a small shelter and store near what is now Corral Road. From this early period until around 1912 there was only sporadic trade between Tustin and San Diego. In 1907 Pierre Teague opened up a grocery store at 7th Street and East Avenue in downtown Tustin which became one of the most popular businesses in town. In 1911 he acquired 1/2 acre (0.20 hectare) of property north of Main Street east of Interstate 5 for $5,000 which he developed into what is now known as Teague Park.
