Tustin, California is a small city located in the Riverside-San Bernardino metropolitan area, about 20 miles from Los Angeles. The population of Tustin was estimated to be over 100,000 as of 2010. It has a long and diverse history that can be traced back to 1853 when it was founded as a trading post by prospectors on what is now known as the Tustin Ranch. The name "Tustin" originates from the native Tongva word "tus-ta." The first permanent residents were Mexican Americans who arrived in 1853. They were followed by American citizens in 1861 and 1862 during the American Civil War. Tustin became an agricultural center after President Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order 9393 giving preference to agriculture in Southern California. The City Council approved incorporation on November 3, 1912 and the city was named for Edwin Augustus Tustin, Jr., an early settler who donated land for setting up shop at what is now First Street and San Pedro Boulevard. In 1938, Judge Roy Bean granted cityhood to all unincorporated areas east of Interstate 5 which made Tustin one of only six cities in Orange County with full municipal rights (the others being Anaheim, Garden Grove, Irvine Spectrum City, Newport Beach and Santa Ana). Since its incorporation into a city government on November 3rd 1912 – much later than most other Californian cities – TUSTIN has experienced many changes both during its short history and since annexation into Pasadena County by Los Angeles County. However, two central themes have been downtown redevelopment and strong community involvement through various programs including recreation; arts & culture; education; law enforcement; infrastructure; economic development and environment conservation. These days there are over 200 businesses operating in downtown TUSTIN while also having more than 120 residential units available for lease or rent within walking distance of all major cultural venues and landmarks such as art galleries, music stores and restaurants
Tustin is a small town in Orange County, California, United States. It was founded in 1887 as a post office on the shores of Lake Tustin. The name comes from "tust" which means "to dry". The first white person to live in Tustin was W.H. Cline who arrived in 1886. In 1923, the post office moved to its current location and became known as Tustin Station. In 1945, the station was destroyed by fire and rebuilt at its present location next to the county courthouse.
