The history of ammunition in Tustin, California dates back to the early 1800s. Ammunition manufacturing began in this area as early as 1824. In 1852, the first store in town was opened by pioneer A.J. O’Donnell and his brother-in-law John Purdy. The business continued until 1911 when it closed due to a fire that destroyed most of the town's businesses. In 1916, Tustin became an incorporated city. At that time, ammunition sales were banned within the city limits but were still allowed at local gun shows and stores. Ammunition production resumed in 1922 when Armoury Ammunition Company was founded by Willis Saylor and Harry Lambert. The company manufactured artillery rounds for World War I and II as well as smoke grenades for WWI and WWII. Ammunition sales stopped again during the 1960s but resumed after Mayor Jack Beasley declared ammo free from state excise taxes on July 1, 1966. Today, ammo is still sold locally with some exceptions such as deer hunting season which requires special bullets for game animals (eaglet shot). Today, Tustin is home to several major ammunition manufacturers including Armoury Ammunition Company (now known as M&T Ammo), Hornady Manufacturing Corporation (now known as Hornady) and Winchester Arms Division (now part of Thompson Gunsmithing).

Tustin was founded in 1911 by C. Eugene Smith and post office named "Tustin" opened on November 7, 1911. The original town site included only a few homes and businesses and it took until 1916 for the first school to open. In 1923, the name of the town changed to "Tustin" after Captain John A. Tustin who fought in World War I and also pioneered aviation in Southern California. The name stuck and has since been used by both cities thereabouts as well as by other towns within Orange County.
