The townsite had two hotels and twenty-one stores when it was platted out in 1868; it grew to include a population of over one hundred people by 1890. By 1910, however, only fifteen people still lived there; most of the original buildings have been demolished or replaced since then. As a result of its geographic isolation and lack of amenities, Turlock has developed some unique aspects which have helped make it an interesting place to live: There are no medical professionals outside Turlock who can provide care for residents with serious health problems; instead, many residents rely on free clinics operating within walking distance from their homes. These clinics offer basic health screenings and treatments such as cancer screenings and blood pressure tests without charges to patients (except for emergencies). Residents also use these services to connect with each other through local social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter (and later Google+) while they wait for help from physicians or undergo surgery or treatment at one of the clinic's locations around town."
Turlock was founded in 1848 by Hermann and Anna Turlock. The town was first named "Hermannstadt", but the name was changed to "Turlock" in 1851 after it became a county settlement. On December 3, 1860, it incorporated as a city. In 1912, the city annexed the adjacent unincorporated community of Redondo Beach. In 1933, the City of Turlock merged with the County of Los Angeles to form the current City of Los Angeles.
