Hance's rancho included land that later became part of the town of Turlock. In 1851, Henry Sutter and his brother-in-law Jedediah Smith founded the Sutter Ranch in present-day Turlock. The townsite was named for them both. In 1855, John Francis Turpin platted and named the town of Healdsburg after him. In 1860, when California became a state, Healdsburg became the capital of San Joaquin County; however, because it was not an incorporated city until 1871 (by which time it had a population of 7),Turlock retained its status as the county seat until 1974 when it was moved to Reddingtown
