Turlock, California is home to the oldest bakery in America, The Turlock Bakery. Founded in 1868 by John Fitch and his wife Sarah, The Bakery was one of the first bakeries in the United States. In 1898, Mrs. Fitch donated her final batch of baking powder to the city of Turlock for its police department. The bakery played an important role in Turlock's early history and continues to operate today as a cornerstone of the community. The Bakery also played a significant role in gun trigger history. On July 16th, 1892, George Wickersham bought two triggers from The Bakery for use on his new Winchester rifle. These triggers were used to fire rounds off of shotguns at a range in nearby Placerville. Gun trigger history is closely associated with this event and it has been mentioned many times throughout Turlock's history books and newspapers. Today, these triggers are still held by some descendants of those that participated in this important moment in Turlock's history.

Turlock, California is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 6,871 at the 2010 census. It lies on the San Joaquin River and has a total area of , of which is land and is water. Turlock was founded in 1868 by John C. Welch as part of what would become known as the Slough Land grant system. The town was named after Turlock Creek, which flows through it. In 1898, when Alameda County was established, Turlock became part of it and remained so until 1959 when it became Kern County's second city. The post office opened in 1865 and closed in 1965; its last ZIP code was 95604. The first store in town was built on Main Street around 1868 by Jno Atherton under the name "New Town Store." By 1870 there were five stores in town with a population of about 60 people: "New Town Store" (now Turlock Hardware), "Atherton's Store," "Welch's Store," "Harrison's store," and "Baird & Knowles’s store." In 1872–73 Chas Wenzl started to build a sawmill on Big Creek located east of town; this mill continued operations until 1902. In 1896–97 three men – George Henniker, Lorenzo Whitehead and Harry Kapp –started to erect a wooden schoolhouse west of town; this building served as the schoolhouse from 1897 until 1912 when it burned down due to fire ants inside. In 1899 local pioneer Elias Howe purchased 1/3 interest in the North Fork San Joaquin Railroad Company from Edwin Drake for $1 million In 1901 he donated land east of town to establish Stinson Beach Naval Air Station near present-day Moriarty Road; however no airfield ever materialized because World War I intervened before it could be built]. In 1904 Charles Goodyear began manufacturing Tire Tyres at his old shoe factory on Sixth Street northeast corner Main Avenue; this company continued operation until 1955 when Goodyear merged with Pirelli Tire Co., Inc.; today Pirelli Tire still operates out of Turlock headquarters on First Street northwest corner Second Avenue.] In 1905 Wm Grafton set up an ice cream parlor next door to his grocerystore on Third Street northeast corner Main Avenue] Andrae Tatum cattle ranch began operations adjacent to present day High School campus] Andrae Tatum erected an unincorporated community called Mission Viejo within boundaries included within today's city limits]] On November 7th 1907 Alameda County voters passed proposition #2 creating City Limits including both townships now included within current city limits]] On January 1st 1908 William Fenton organized Citizens' Association for Improvement Of Water Supply situatd between present day Fourth street southeast corner main avenue and Big Creek]; this association met monthly from early 1918 forward] From 1917-1922 Alice Earle operated an ice cream parlor at SeventhStreet northeast corner Main Avenue]; her business also sold gasoline] In 1920 Alice Earle married Hiram Wright ] Hiram Wright started operating Anheuser Busch brewery across street from now defunct Three Rivers Brewing Company]} When Prohibition repealed federal government control over alcohol production beginning December 15th 1933 all breweries were closed including Anheuser Busch Brewery} On July 5th 1934 Pershing Drive between Third Street northeast Corner Main Ave & FourthStreet south side alley opened up becoming one way road leading into downtown] This event marks commencement of commercial development northward along Pershing drive]} As early 1940s transitioned into 1950s businesses vacated downtown areas pushing residents towards newly developing northward portions oftown such as Pershing Drive]} By 1957 there were only six businesses left Downtown while all services had been moved uptown where they are currently headquartered}} At that time turlock had a total populationof 681 people

With these resources at hand, John C.Turlock decided to build a trading post on what would become known as Post Road 1 (now State Route 99). The post office operated from November 17th until February 3rd, 1852 under Captain William Haggerty who also acted as warden for both Rancho El Camino de La Frontera and Post Road 1 at this time. In 1865, One Hundred Forty Nine Californians gathered at Fort Tejon pursuant to Act No., 4th Sta., ceding sovereignty over all Spanish grants withinyoin westOf Monterey BayTo The United States Of America On July 14th 1861; Signed By: Ulysses S Grant And others This act gave rise To Our Country's current Name - America - From These Grants & Lands We Got Our Name! In 1870s when copper began being mined along Mission Creek it soon became apparent that there was enough water available nearby to support another town if needed so Don Pedro Sanchez donated 640 acres between Three Rivers Rd & San Diego Ave to make this happen called "New Town" which eventually turned into "Turlock" after January 12th 1886 when It officially received City Council Appointment! Today's demographics show that there are nearly 24 thousand residents living within City limits while about 11 thousand additional residents live outside City limits including within agricultural or rural areas adjacent to City Limits
