The town grew rapidly when railroad construction through Inyo County commenced in 1887 and by 1912 it had reached its present size. Growth continued with the opening of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway in 1912 and then with completion of Interstate 10 in 1925. The arrival of Latinos to Turlock accelerated during World War II; defense spending led to an influx of workers and businesses into town. A high school was built in 1951, followed by a new hospital in 1962. The post office closed

Turlock, California is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 1,816 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern edge of the Inland Empire and is northeast of Bakersfield. The name "Turlock" likely comes from the Yokuts word uta (wedge) and jarl (town). The first European to visit what is now Turlock was Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo on November 15, 1769. He anchored off what is now Point Conception and sent back reports of his sighting of land to Captain James Cook on December 11, 1770. A Rancho San Joaquin de la Cañada was granted to José Antonio Altamont in 1839 by Governor Manuel Nieto for ranching purposes. The railroads arrived in 1865 when Southern Pacific Railroad built a line from Bakersfield east to Stockton via Turlock-Aguadilla-Lompoc. At first, the town filled with people who used the trains as they traveled between Bakersfield and points north. However, after several years of service there were only a few residents left when Amtrak began services through Los Angeles in 1971. In 1984 Amtrak discontinued passenger services entirely through Turlock so it became an unincorporated community within Kern County limits once again. In 1990 General Motors adopted its new North American naming system which included turlocks among several other communities throughout California including Flint Hills Village outside Omaha Nebraska and El Cajon Ivanhoe outside San Diego California . GM chose turlocks because it was one of four communities across North America that had been historically associated with Chevrolet products . Nowadays many people in Turlock still refer to themselves simply as "GMers". In recent years there have been efforts made by local groups such as Chamber Of Commerce et al., to bring tourist attractions like wine tasting tours etc., but these have generally failed due to lack of interest or funding from outside sources
Turlock is a census-designated place (CDP) in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 20,612 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Claremont–Salinas Metropolitan Statistical Area. Turlock was founded by George Turlock and others in 1868 as a station on the Central Pacific Railroad. The turquoise mines near Turlock were first developed in this area in the early 19th century. In 1893, a post office was established at Turlock, and it continued to serve until 1959. In 1902, parts of what are now Riverside and Moreno valleys were annexed by the town of Claremont; however, Claremont never achieved much growth until after World War II when a new freeway called Route 66 exit 4 south from Interstate 5 crossed through town, linking with other towns and counties around Los Angeles County. As this highway grew more congested and less traveled than most other roads in Malibu Creek Valley, people began moving out of downtown Claremont for residential development along I-5; this led to the name change for Turlock to "Claremont–Salinas" during that time period because all surrounding municipalities had adopted similar names for their areas beginning with "Claremon". The last post office closed at Turlock on December 24, 1959; its successor in nearby Mishawaka opened on January 1st 1960. At that time there were only 6 residents registered with the USPS within 1 mile of where they lived - all but one being located east of I-5 between Exposition Parkway and Ramona Boulevard (the exceptions being two elderly women who resided just north of I-5). Today there are over 100 residents Registered with USPS within ½ mile of their home - almost all located east or west of I-5 between King Street/Exposition Parkway/Ramona Boulevard and Seventh Avenue/Mandalay Bay Boulevard
