Turlock is a town located in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Middletown–Salinas, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Turlock was platted in 1887 and named for General George Armstrong Custer who fought in the Indian Wars. The town became an agricultural center after being developed as a route from Los Angeles to Stockton via the Turlock Valley Railroad. In 1915, it merged with neighboring Salinas to form a new city called Salinas-Turlock. In 1942, during World War II, most of the male citizens of Salinas were drafted into the military and sent to Camp Arroyo outside of Salina where they were trained in mechanics and construction work on airfields throughout California. Most women also served in this war effort; however, there are only few remaining records identifying them by name or unit number. The post office opened in 1892, changed its name to Turlock in 1915 and closed on September 14th 1960 due to consolidation within Kern County's post offices since then (the old post office building still stands). The first mayor was Wm Halsey Draper and later John Ladd Atherton served as mayor from 1951 until his death on November 25th 1969 after serving for 43 years cumulative. On December 4th 1970 Mayor Don Herring resigned effective date due to health reasons after three terms as Mayor including one term without interruption which he had been leading since January 1st 1974 when he succeeded Atherton following Ladd's death two weeks earlier at age 93 years old

Turlock was founded in 1851 by Captain George Hearn and his wife, Martha. The town was named for Julius Caesar's birthplace, Turenne Station. It grew rapidly due to the railroad arrival, and in 1875 it had a population of 10 people. In 1907, the post office closed and Turlock became an incorporated city. The centerpiece of the city's economy were agriculture and dairy products until World War II when oil production boomed around the area. After that time, Turlock lost its economic importance and experienced a rapid decline in population over the years. Today, most of the downtown is abandoned with only a few pieces remaining from earlier buildings dating back to the 1860s-1880s when Turlock was one of California's most significant towns. However, parts of older homes remain as well giving visitors a glimpse into what life may have been like back then on Main Street in this picturesque small community. The history of Turlock can be traced back to 1851 when Captain George Hearn established himself as a landowner in central California after purchasing Rancho Las Animas de la Coquimbo from Manuel Nieto. He named his new settlement after Julius Caesar's birthplace - Turenne Station - which he located near present day San Bernardino Countyline on what is now called Fir Grove Road (Route 66). By 1865, there were over 100 residents living in Turenne Station; however, it would not stay open long due to lack of business opportunities or other problems associated with Railroad Town development at that time. In 1907, Captain George Hearn sold his interest in Turenne Station to Amedee Coudert who developed it into an agricultural center known for growing fruits and vegetables such as cantaloupe and honeydews until World War II when oil production boomed around the area making turquoise valuable for fuel purposes outside of North America proper; however original businesses continued operations until they closed during those timescapes although some stores still survive today including: The Hardware Store (now Home Depot), Mrs.'s Clothing Store (later Zellerbach) & Mr.'s Shoes (later Kmart). Prior to its closure many citizens gathered monthly at Citizens' Hall which stood just east off U .S . Route 66 opposite modern day State Route 395 where meetings were held about local issues such as taxation rates etc... As mentioned before many old structures are still extant from earlier years including: Mrs.'s Clothing store built circa 1870 which has been preserved as an example of Romanesque Revival architecture; The Hardware Store building built circa 1896 also remains intact.;and Mr.'s Shoes building erected circa 1915 also remains extant.. These examples underscore how important early up-and-coming settlements like Turlock were during these timescapes given their impact on later developments both within California as well as throughout America!
Turlock was founded in 1849 by Jedediah Smith and his brother-in-law, George Stephenson. The original town was a small community on the banks of the Turlock River. In 1851, the town became a post office with three stores and a population of twenty five people. By 1861, the population had grown to seventy five people and two churches. The first school in Turlock was built in 1857 and served as a daycare for children until 1870 when it became a high school. The first public library was built in 1865 and served as the town's library until 1926 when it merged with the county library system.
