Turlock is a city in the Inland Empire of California, located in western San Bernardino County. It is the seat of Turlock City Council and it was founded on October 15, 1887 by members of the Mormon Battalion who were fleeing Mexican rule. The name "Turlock" comes from Spanish for "the place where the bulls Innis drink." The first gun magazine in America was opened here on December 5, 1892 by Samuel Colt. For many years this was the only gun magazine west of the Rockies. In 1938, Pernod Ricard began manufacturing here and soon became one of America's leading spirits manufacturers. By 1934, over ninety percent of all American firearms sales took place at Pernod Ricard stores. In 1969, Pernod Ricard discontinued its operations in California and closed all its Turlock stores except for one which still operates today as an importer/distributor. At that time, Gun Digest Corporation (GDC) assumed management of all Gunsmoke magazines located throughout California including Turlock. GDC has continued to operate Gunsmoke outposts throughout California ever since. As with most things related toGunsmoke Magazine history- there are not many contemporaneous sources for information about this unique publication save memories and anecdotes passed down through word-of-mouth transmission! However there are a few scattered references to GDC taking over management of Gunsmoke Magazine from other entities during various times periods: 1) 1954 - When GDC acquired control over Pacific Sporting Goods Company's firearms business; 2) 1957 - When GDC took over Management OfPMC's Magazines; 3) 1971 - When management transferred ownership from Pacific Sporting Goods Company to Golden Gate Broadcasting Corporation; 4) 1974 - After being sold by Golden Gate Broadcasting Corporation to Don Aguilar Enterprises Incorporated; 5) 1978 - when GDC merged with Country Music Television Associates Incorporated

Many small businesses have been established here over the years to serve the needs of the local community including: a grocery store, an auto garage/repair shop, a beauty salon/conditioner shop (now closed), two restaurants (one now closed), two banks (Branch Bank & Trust & First National Bank), three churches (First Baptist Church of Turlock- now defunct), five schools (grades K-12th grade through adult education) - four private academies - one college - all of which are currently inactive or no longer operate due to lack of students or faculty; plus numerous family farms that provide eggs (from hens) for local production; plus several hundred acres of open space that provides hiking opportunities as well as access to streams running through town center

The population was 10,714 at the 2010 census. The Turlock area has been inhabited by humans since at least 5500 BC, when they were found pottery shards in what is now downtown. The first permanent settlement was made in 1851 when a group of Mormon pioneers founded a ranch called Harmony Grove near present-day Turlock. From here, they began to explore and trade with other parts of California. In 1865, businessman George Hearst donated land to build a stockyards and grain elevator on his property north of town; this became Hearst Ranch No. 2 (now part of City Hall). In 1901, Anna May Wright opened her first store in town; it would be her final business venture until she died in 1966. By 1910, most businesses had closed down due to economic hard times including one that offered games for children under 12 years old called "Tunnel". In 1916–17, during World War I, Turlock served as a military depot for troops moving into and out of Southern California through southern Nevada and Arizona; it also housed an air raid shelter. Prominent figures who lived or worked in or around Turlock include banker William Randolph Hearst (1863-1939), actress Myrna Loy (1915-1986), educator Earl Scruggs (1895-1976), composer Jerome Kern (1885-1966), writer Clifford Odets (1904-1985), builder Julius Shulman (1892-1965) and actor Lew Ayres Jr.(1900-1967). On October 1, 1887,[1] John Sutter discovered gold while exploring for his new mining operation at Sutter's Fort; within two years he had developed over $10 million worth of gold ore from various mines on his new range.[2][3] Initially known as "Sutter's Fort",[4][5] after 1870 it became just known as "Turlock".[6][7] Gold prospecting continued until 1898 when American Railroads completed their main route between Stockton and Reno via Carson City; therefore there was little need for formal mining operations in Trinity Valley.[8][9] The community grew slowly until 1907 whenTurlock High School opened its doors following approval by the voters.[10] A post office was established at this time but no mail actually reached residents because transportation options were poor . . . even though people traveled upcountry to bring goods back home such as cattle products which could then be sold at local ranchers' markets
Turlock, California was founded in 1853 by John Sutter. The town's first post office was established in 1854. In 1865, the United States Post Office moved from its original location to Turlock and it remained there until it was discontinued in 1967.
