Turlock, California is known as the "workshop of the world" for its many firearms manufacturers. The city was founded in 1881 by John L. Turlock and his wife, Eliza Jane. The townspeople were responsible for manufacturing rifles, shotguns, pistols and ammunition in their own homes and businesses. Firearms manufactures such as Colt, Winchester and Savage made a large impact on the city's economy. In 1928, the City Council passed an ordinance authorizing Mayor Harry Wiggs to erect a gunsmiths shop at 14th Street and Elm Avenue to commemorate this history. The Gunsmiths Shop has been in operation continuously since then." In 1881 John L.Turlock founded Turlock Arsenal Corporation with two primary goals in mind: To produce quality rifles for use by law enforcement officers and civilians alike, and to promote rifle shooting among city residents. Today there are over 100 firearms manufacturers located in Turlock including Colt & Co., Winchester Repeating Arms Company (Winchester), Savage Arms Company (Savage), Browning Arms Manufacturing Company (Browning), Stevens & Sauer Gunmaker Inc., Pfeil & Berger Ammunition Manufacturing Company (Pfeil) and many more! It is interesting to note that these companies have all contributed significantly to Turlock's current culture of firearm manufacture - from designing, engineering and manufacturing firearms themselves to providing necessary parts and accessories for other manufacturers' products. The Gunsmiths Shop is one of only a few remaining examples of an early 20th century gunsmith business left in Turlock! Today it offers visitors access to original drawings, schematics and photos dating back to when guns were actually designed according to specific principles rather than assembled from leftover parts found lying around! Not only does this provide unique insight into how firearms design evolved over time but also provides a great opportunity for visitors who would like learn more about how these important tools help make our world function better!

The name of the town comes from Ottoman sources meaning "place where horses are bought." In 1853, when surveyors laid out what is now Kern County, they included part of what is now Turlock in their map. George Wirtz, who later built Wirtz Dam on the river, started businesses in Turlock and other nearby towns including Donner Lake and Rosedale during this time period. By 1870 there were 10 businesses operating in the town with a population of 191 people. In 1914 Turlock became an incorporated municipality with a population of 1,812 people after being approved by voters via referendum. The city has experienced significant growth since then; its current size is 3 square miles (7 km2). In recent years new development has helped make Turlock one of the most rapidly growing cities in central California; its median home price increased from $133,000 to $269,000 between 2000 and 2010 alone! From across southern California visitors will see more than just picturesque villages like Donner Lake or Lakeside Village; they will also find examples of classic Americana such as Old West saloons or mining communities dating back to 1848-49: both are found hereabouts too! Although today's downtown still showcases some notable architecture - such as Wirtz Dam - much more modern amenities have replaced these historic landmarks over time...more about which later! Turlock's diverse history dates back to 1876 when settlement began along what is now Kern River Roadstead near present day Anzaville Avenue/Hwy 99W. This early agriculturally based community thrived due to its location at an ideal crossing point for wagon trains transporting goods downriver to markets throughout Southern California and Nevada Territory (present day Bakersfield). Today many residents still participate actively in local agricultural production through their own Anthem Farms winery operations as well asJoiners Gardens Nursery & Garden Center

In 1865 it became part of the new county of Stanislaus and incorporated as a city on October 15, 1906. The original downtown business district included over 100 stores and two banks. The Turlock Arsenal manufactured artillery shells during World War I and World War II. The community began to decline after the end of World War II but has since regained some shine with its growing art scene. There are several large-scale art galleries in town including the Stinson Museum of Art, the Sausalito Museum of Art and Pacific Coast College's School of Visual Arts Gallery which has developed into one of Northern California's leading Fine Arts programs.
