The first white person to live in what is now Turlock was Alvord Cooke in 1879. He named it after his home state of Vermont. Turlock has been inhabited since Prehistoric times by Mono people who hunted and collected plants along the Stanislaus River valley which flows through their land. They also built masonry dwellings from local red sandstone that can still be seen today around town sites and inside some of the older buildings. The Mono people were followed by other cultures over time including the Chumash, who arrived about 1800 started farming and raising sheep, cattle, horses and pigs; they built trading posts on nearby mountain tops where they sold goods such as hides, feathers and obsidian (a type of volcanic glass). The Spanish founded Mission San Francisco de Asís (Fresno) on Mount Shasta in 1797–1823; it became one of several missions defined as part of Rancho San Bernardino because Mexican nationals were allowed to purchase land outside Oficinas Secundarias or government-controlled settlements during this period. In 1853 an American gold prospector named John Sutter discovered gold near present day Turlock while traveling down the San Joaquin Valley; he claimed most of eastern California for the United States upon his return trip to Sacramento on July 14th, 1855. By 1865 most inhabitants had either moved out or left for various reasons including conflict with Mexico over land grants given them following US annexation of California; many residents relocated to Nevada during Gold Rush years when there was little chance for returns from mines located in these areas due to high costs associated with exploration & development). Today, there are few traces remaining from those early days in Turlock - most importantly, the two churches which remain standing today - St John's Presbyterian Church & Reformed Episcopal Church both built in 1903 and still serve as vibrant mediums through which people come together to worship God and learn about His Son Jesus Christ. These structures have been witness to many different Generations since they were erected; each one has provided comfort and support for neighbors within their respective communities over time!
Turlock is a city in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 54,958 at the 2010 census. It is the county's second-largest city and the largest in the central San Bernardino Valley. The Turlock area was first occupied by Mono people who hunted game animals there before being forced from their land by white settlers. The area now known as Turlock was named for John Sutter, an early settler and builder of mill sites in what is now Riverside County. In 1851, United States Colonel William Fenton recommended that Turlock be named for him because he had "excellent prospects for irrigation from this river" The first post office in Turlock opened on March 12, 1852. The name of the town changed to its present form on July 1, 1875 after it became part of Los Angeles County.
