It is located about an hour and a half west of Sacramento on I-80. Turlock was founded in 1874 by early California pioneers as a small farmstead named "Strawberry Patch". The name changed to "Turlock" in 1881 when the post office was moved there from nearby Stockton. The town's current name derives from its location on the Turlock River, just south of where it empties into the San Joaquin River. The town first enjoyed some popularity as a transportation hub for farmers and their animals traveling betweenStockton and nearby Redding. In 1907, however, Interstate 80 replaced U.S. Route 99 as the main thoroughfare through central CA., so Turlock lost much of its significance as a commercial center after that time. More recently, however, Turlock has seen renewed development in agriculture with new businesses starting up to exploit new irrigation techniques available in this area; specifically fruit orcharding and vineyards dating back to the late 19th century have been restored and are now popular tourist destinations

The first school in Turlock was opened in 1870 and became the only high school west of Sacramento until it merged with Valley View High School in 1988. In 1914, the United States Postal Service began offering mail delivery to residents of the town; this service continued until 1985. In 1944, turLock passed a resolution to become an official U.S.-Mexico border crossing; however, no such action took place as Mexico refused to recognize any U.S.-held territory east of its border as part of the Mexican Republic then known as Greater Mexico City (now Mexico City). In 1957, construction began on what would eventually become the world’s largest air cargo terminal when Terminal Way Airport opened adjacent to town center; this airport continues to serve today as one of America’s busiest international airports serving both passenger traffic and cargo operations with a variety of airlines including Boeing 747s and Airbus A380s. The town has also seen significant development over the years including: construction of a new downtown shopping district which includes several large department stores along with numerous smaller businesses; redevelopment off I-5 into an upscale housing development which now includes several blocks dedicated exclusively to luxury properties; addition of new schools including two elementary schools (grades K-6) as well as a middle school (grades 7-12); major renovation/updates to city hall including installation of energy efficient lighting and updated public infrastructure features such as water systems that are now drought resistant; completion of Stage 1aof the Turlock Master Plan which provides for mixed use development around city center with accompanying streetscape improvements designed specifically for pedestrian circulation while accommodating future growth plans for both urban and rural areas adjacent to city limits
