Tulare is a city in Fresno County, California. The population was 23,645 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in the county and the largest city within Fresno County by area. The Tulare Municipal Airport covers an area of , making it one of the most developed airports in California. The region that would become Tulare was first populated by Native American tribes. A mission San Francisco de Asís was founded in 1821 on land donated by Mariano Castro, father of José Castro, later overthrown as dictator of Cuba and founder of Californios. In 1842, General José Joaquín Cámpora led an expedition to claim what are now central and northern California for Mexico; his forces burned many villages during their march through what is today Tulare County. When gold was discovered in 1848 near Sutter's Mill, settlers began to arrive from all over North America; among them were Mexican Americans who had been working on ranches along the Sacramento River valley since before 1840. By 1860, there were more than 500 people living in Tulare County; 90% of these were Mexican Americans or their descendants. Mining became important early on because this region had rich deposits of silver and gold ore but also yielded a good deal of tannery products such as leather and shoe leathers (the industry peaked around 1870). This period also saw a dramatic increase in immigration: from 1700 to 1850, Mexicans comprised only 1/5th of US residents; by 1910 they accounted for almost two-thirds. With World War I looming large and hate crimes against Mexicans becoming more common (there were three attacks against Mexicans between 1915 and 1917), local officials responded with passerby patrols that discouraged any kind of public violence against non-citizens – even if done with force or without provocation. This policy continued until 1919 when Proposition 2 limited voting rights to citizens aged 21 or older while providing property tax breaks to developers who built new schools or other essential infrastructure downtown; this law allowed whites outnumber Latinos six times over within fifteen years while maintaining white supremacy throughout much of California's social hierarchy. In 1925 Winton Redding established himself as an entrepreneur with a small tannery operation near present day Fillmore Lake outside of town; he soon branched out into agricultural production including raising chickens and pigs, growing vegetables (a rare activity at the time) for market gardens inside town limits then exporting those crops across the state line to Northern California via Cannery Row Station east side streets like Soquel Creek Road & Park Boulevard north deep within Fresno Valley - still doing so today! Tulare, California is a small city in the far eastern corner of California. With a population of just over 100,000 people as of 2010, it is the smallest municipality in the state. It has been served by Tulare County since 1879 and its first post office was established in 1875. The name comes from Spanish for "tall oak." The city was founded on October 28, 1877 by George W. Pickett and his brother-in-law Emory Laughlin. It was named after the then- adjoining but now extinct Tulare River valley. In 1880, they organized what became known as the townsite around their new town site which had been surveyed earlier that year by John Sutter and Augustus De Forest. The name may be derived from one of these men's ranch holdings located along the river: Los Alamos Rancho de las Salinas de la Frontera (the La Salina Ranch). Pickett served as mayor of Tulare from 1902 to 1904 and again from 1909 to 1912; he also chaired the board of supervisors for many years prior thereto. He died in 1928 at age 84 years old after a long life devoted to public service in his home county and throughout California
In 1865, prospectors discovered gold in the Tulare River valley. Gold was quickly mined and prices skyrocketed. By 1876, the entire region had been ruined by mining and the area became known as the "Dirt Caves." In 1887, a new era began when railroads arrived in the Tulare Valley, which allowed for easier access to markets andachuco gold fields were discovered in 1901. The city of Truckee began to grow up around this time and by 1912, it had reached its current size.
