In 1955 Rancho Seco merged with neighboring communities to form the new city of Bakersfield; however, rancho land continued to be used for agricultural purposes until it became available for development again in 1984 when it was annexed by Tulare proper. Today, Tulare is home to an Antiochian Catholic church and numerous businesses including two grocery stores and three theaters which are all part of the IMAX theater complex that opened on October 5th 2007 just outside of town limits

Tulare was founded in 1868 as a station on the Southern Pacific Railroad. The first post office was established there in 1870. In 1916, Tulare became an agricultural center with large vineyards and orchards. After World War II, it became an industrial center with aluminum production and other manufacturing businesses until they went out of business in the 1970s. Today, Tulare contains a variety of retail stores, small-town restaurants, and service businesses along with a few acreages used for educational purposes such as Los Alamos National Laboratory School District No. 1 which serves grades kindergarten through eighth grade; Kern Valley College; and Lick Observatory which has two telescopes including one that makes use of short-wavelength light to view objects beyond Earth's atmosphere
Tulare was founded as a post office in 1872, and became a city in 1912. The town grew rapidly after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, and by 1920 it had over 100,000 residents. Tulare was officially incorporated as a city on November 5, 1924. The city's economy is based on agriculture, trade unions and tourism.
